Today Students for Life of America joins several other top pro-life organizations outside the closing arguments of the Kermit Gosnell murder trial for a noon press conference and prayer vigil.
The following is text of remarks from Tina Whittington, SFLA Executive Vice President, as prepared:
“Through this trial, America has been made aware of the corrupt and dirty practices committed at abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s house of horrors. We hope that today marks the beginning of justice for the women who died through his depraved negligence and for the babies who were brutally murdered after botched abortion attempts that delivered them alive and healthy, as well as those killed while still in the womb.
“We are here today because we want to open the eyes of every American even further, to let them know that this is not an isolated incident for big abortion businesses. The shocking horrors revealed through the testimonies in this trial are nothing more than business as usual for Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry. Planned Parenthood has tried to distance itself from the mom and pop chop shops like Gosnell’s, but we know that the same things are occurring behind their closed doors, too.
“Only 30 miles from where we are standing, Planned Parenthood Wilmington Center in Delaware has sent five women to the emergency room since January. It had to stop doing abortions because of unsafe and unsanitary conditions similar to the ones found at Gosnell’s abortion mill. One nurse said of the operating room, ‘It’s not washed down, it’s not even cleaned off. It has bloody drainage on it.’ She also said patients ‘could be at risk of getting hepatitis, even AIDS.’
“One month ago, a Planned Parenthood lobbyist from Florida testified that a baby born alive during an abortion should be allowed to be killed. She said, and I quote: ‘We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.’ Gosnell routinely killed babies born alive after an abortion – often by cutting their spinal cords. Apparently that’s a decision Planned Parenthood supports a physician like Gosnell making.
“The tragedies that occurred at Gosnell’s abortion clinic are happening 915 times every day in Planned Parenthoods across the United States. This is business as usual for the abortion industry – and I mean ‘business’ literally. Gosnell was a multi-millionaire and Planned Parenthood makes at least $150 million from abortion every year. Gosnell and Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood, earn their living off the pain and crisis of vulnerable women. In every abortion the humanity of the child is discarded and the mother used for profit.
“This trial and the gruesome testimony given should be a wakeup call to America. Make no mistake, the crimes of Gosnell, as horrific and shocking as they appear to be, are simply business as usual at Planned Parenthood and abortion facilities in America. I want to thank everyone here today for coming together to pray with us to seek justice for Gosnell’s victims and the 55 million victims of legal abortion in this country.”
