For those who regularly follow campus politics, it’s clear that free speech is no longer the shared common value it used to be. Instead, campus administrators and student government leaders use their power to squash the free speech rights of pro-life students and others they don’t want to hear. This past year, we have filed and settled more lawsuits than ever before against schools that continue to infringe on our students’ rights. In other instances, students have attacked our group’s displays, and the schools have largely remained silent. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life said, “We are proud of our Students for Life groups who stood up for free speech at these schools, but we shouldn’t have to fight with schools in order for pro-life students to be guaranteed their rights. As we head into a new year, I can’t imagine a better resolution for school administrators than to stop suppressing the free speech rights of pro-life students. If every school resolved to live up to their commitment to be a place for the free exchange of ideas, we wouldn’t have to create a ‘worst for free speech’ list.”
